Masking Effect of Opaque Resins on the Metallic Color of Dental Alloys

Abstract
The purpose of study was to investigate the masking effect of opaque resins to cp-Ti or Au-based alloy, and to evaluate the effect of shade and thickness of composite resin veneers to color coefficients of final metal-resin veneer systems. Commercially pure Ti (CP-Ti) and Au-base alloy (Baker-420) were used for the metal substrates, and five light-cure opaque resins (A2O, A3O, OA2, OB0 and OB1) and four different shades (A1, A2, A3 and A3.5) of the composite resin were used in this study. To mask the metallic color, 0.1 §® thick opaque resin was applied to metal substrates. Mineral oil was coated between each layer (metal substrate, opaque reisn, composite resin veneer) to minimize the light scattering at the interfaces. Color spectrophotometer was used to measure the color coefficients (CIE L * a * b *) under white backgraound and black background, and the color differences (¥ÄE *) and translucent parameters (TP) were calculated. Masking effect of A2O and A3O opaque resins better than OA2, OB0 and OB1 opaque resins. For the thin composite resin veneer, masking effects to cp-Ti was better than those to Au-based alloy. As the composite resin veneer became thick, the difference of masking effect and the two metal substrates was decreased. For lighter shade of composite resin (A1 or A2), 0.25-0.50 §® thick A2O and A3O opaque resin to cp-Ti caused ¥ÄE * for below 2.5, however, more than 1.0 §® thick opaque resin was necessary to have small ¥ÄE * (<2.7). For darker shade of composite resins (A3 or A3.5), minimum thickness of composite resin veneer was increased to obtain the acceptable ¥ÄE *.
